Grading Policy
K-5 Grading Policy
PS 9’s grading policy serves as a guiding document that helps all stakeholders (students, families, school staff) come to a shared understanding of what is required to earn a specific grade. The grades are determined on how well students master the subject matter, concepts, content, and skills in a specific subject/course.

Determination of Grades
Teachers use a combination of classwork, projects/assignments, homework, and multiple assessments to determine understanding of concepts and mastery of skills. Students will be graded based on how well they have learned the subject matter, concepts, content, and skills in a course. Attendance is not taken into consideration when determining grades, however, attendance will affect student learning and may have an impact on their performance. The following assessments are used throughout the year to monitor progress towards mastery of grade level standards
- Writing baseline, mid-year, end-year benchmarks
- End of Unit Assessments (all core subjects- ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies)
- iReady Diagnostics in Both Math and ELA
- ELA Performance Based Assessments/ Projects
Special Considerations
Students with Disabilities - Students will receive specially designed instruction and accommodations based on their IEP to provide access to grade-level standards and enable them to make progress towards their annual goal.
Multilingual Learners - Students should be given the opportunity to demonstrate mastery in their home/native language.
Communicating Student Progress
There are two scheduled Parent Teacher Conferences at the end of marking periods 1 and 2, where report cards are shared with families. Additionally, teachers communicate student progress on a regular basis; they send emails, make phone calls, and send notes to share progress and any concerns. All assessment results are shared with families.
